Ricard Cervera, MD, PhD, is Specialist Physician at the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Unit, Hospital Clínic, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Dr. Cervera qualified in Medicine in 1983 from the Universitat de Barcelona and from 1984 until 1988 trained in Internal Medicine at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. He obtained his PhD degree from the Universitat de Barcelona for his thesis on anticardiolipin antibodies. His post-doctoral experience included two years at the Lupus Research Unit, The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, London, England.

Among other awards, he has received the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine Award for research on antibodies to endothelial cells, the Fernández-Cruz Award from the Rhône-Poulenc Farma Foundation, and the Juan Vivancos Award from the Consorci d'Hospitals de Barcelona. He has been the recipient of research grants from the Spanish Departments of Health and Education and Science, British Council and the European Commission.

Dr. Cervera is a member of the Catalan, Spanish, and International Societies of Internal Medicine. He is coordinator of the "Euro-lupus" project and of the European Working Party on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. He has organized six international workshops of this working party in several cities of Europe.

Dr. Cervera has presented over 50 invited lectures and has published more than 200 scientific papers. He is co-editor of the books "Antibodies to endothelial cells and vascular damage" , "The antiphospholipid syndrome" and "Enfermedades Autoinmunes Sistémicas y Reumáticas". His current major research interest include clinical and immunological aspects of connective tissue diseases, particularly the pathogenesis of vascular damage in systemic lupus erythematosus, primary Sjögren's syndrome, and the antiphospholipid syndrome.
